Beauty: Coffee scrub

April 21, 2016

We all love a good exfoliant. There's nothing like shedding a layer of skin to make you feel like a whole new person. Exfoliants come in all different forms, but my new favorite is a scrub I made myself out of coffee grounds and coconut oil.

Best practice when it comes to exfoliating is once or twice weekly. It's a holy part of my Sunday beauty ritual. Scrubbing away dead skin cells speeds up the cell renewal process, which turns your complexion from dull and dry to bright and vibrant instantly. Exfoliating also reduces fine lines, wrinkles, ingrown hairs, and helps prevent breakouts over time.

Why a coffee scrub? Coffee is antioxidant-rich and an amazing anti-inflammatory. The caffeine draws out excess moisture from your skin (read: instant de-bloating!), causing it to look and feel smoother and firmer. Plus, when applied to skin in scrub form, it's been said to reduce the appearance of cellulite with regular use (not an Internet rumor). Coconut oil is incredibly moisturizing. Adding it to your skincare routine can make you glow like Gisele.

You're a kick-ass, get-er-done woman, which means you have the power to make a coffee scrub your own damn self. That's also not to say that a man wouldn't appreciate this too! It's super easy: grind any kind of coffee, add coconut oil. Your granules should be about as coarse as your table sea salt. If you use a French press (like me), save your excess grinds and reuse them in a scrub. Melt about a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil into your grinds, and stir. Store your scrub in a container in your shower or a dark, cool place.
